Comparison

Stripe customer portal vs an embedded cancellation flow

Stripe's customer portal can collect cancellation reasons and offer a retention coupon before a customer cancels. That is enough for some teams. ChurnIntel is for teams that need the flow inside their own product, with custom reasons, different offers per reason, and reporting ranked by lost MRR.

What Stripe's customer portal provides

  • Built-in cancel subscription option (on by default).
  • A fixed list of cancellation reasons (e.g. too expensive, need more features, found an alternative).
  • Optional free-text when the customer picks “other reason”.
  • Optional single retention coupon before cancellation completes.
  • Hosted by Stripe — customers use Stripe's portal UI, not yours.

Based on Stripe's customer portal documentation. Capabilities can change; verify in your Stripe dashboard.

What ChurnIntel adds

  • Embedded widget inside your app — triggered from your cancel button.
  • Your own reason list per flow, editable without a deploy.
  • Four offer types mapped per reason: coupon, pause, plan switch, contact team.
  • Multiple flows with audience targeting and priority order.
  • Offer-once and cooldown rules.
  • Reasons ranked by lost MRR, offer accept rate, journey Sankey, CSV export.

When the Stripe portal is enough

  • You already send customers to the Stripe customer portal to manage billing.
  • A fixed reason list and one retention coupon meet your needs.
  • You do not need per-reason offers or revenue-weighted reason ranking.
  • You want zero engineering work beyond enabling portal settings.

When ChurnIntel is a better fit

  • Cancellation happens inside your product, not on a Stripe-hosted page.
  • Different reasons need different save attempts (pause for low usage, team contact for missing features).
  • Enterprise and trial customers should see different flows.
  • You need to rank reasons by MRR and measure offer performance.
  • You want offer abuse controls (offer-once, cooldown).

Implementation comparison

  • Stripe portal: configure in Stripe Dashboard — no code for basic cancellation + reasons + coupon.
  • ChurnIntel: ~10 minutes in ChurnIntel (OAuth, sync, configure, publish) plus one engineering task to add the widget script and call showCancelFlow() — usually under an hour.

ChurnIntel is not a replacement for the entire customer portal — only the cancellation experience inside your product.

What we are not claiming

ChurnIntel is not “better than Stripe” in every case. If the portal meets your needs, use it — it is included with Stripe Billing. ChurnIntel is for teams that have outgrown a single coupon and a fixed reason list, and need the cancellation experience inside their own product with revenue-weighted insight.

Questions

Can I use both?+

Yes. Some teams use the Stripe customer portal for general billing self-service and ChurnIntel for in-app cancellation. They solve different entry points. Make sure customers are not confused by two different cancel paths unless that is intentional.

Does ChurnIntel replace Stripe Billing?+

No. ChurnIntel connects to Stripe Billing. It does not process payments or replace Stripe as your billing system.

Does Stripe's portal rank reasons by MRR?+

Stripe records cancellation reasons in the portal flow. ChurnIntel's differentiation is ranking those reasons by lost MRR from your flow data and tying each reason to a specific retention offer.

Is ChurnIntel a Stripe partner product?+

ChurnIntel connects through Stripe Connect OAuth. We do not claim a specific Stripe partner tier on this page — verify current partnership status separately if that matters to your procurement process.
