Segment Cancellation Flows by Plan and Billing Interval
Plan and billing interval are the fastest segmentation signals in Stripe-backed SaaS. They proxy for commitment, price point, and often support expectations — without waiting for a cancel survey.
Part of the cancellation flow segmentation cluster. Pair with retention offer strategy so each segment’s reasons map to appropriate saves.

Why plan and interval matter at cancel time
- Monthly self-serve — often price-sensitive; pause or downgrade may fit better than annual-only offers
- Annual contracts — higher MRR at stake; may need contact-team or plan-switch, not a shallow coupon
- Legacy or grandfathered plans — wrong default flow can offer a “discount” that is worse than their current rate
Common routing patterns
| Segment | Flow emphasis | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Entry / starter plan | Shorter survey; activation-oriented reasons | Do not blame “price” when onboarding failed |
| Pro / business tier | Feature-gap reasons; plan-switch offer | Verify target plan exists in Stripe |
| Monthly billing | Pause or temporary discount | Respect offer-once rules |
| Annual billing | Contact success or scheduled downgrade | May need human follow-up for contract terms |
Implementation notes (ChurnIntel)
Audience rules can filter on Stripe price/plan identifiers and billing interval. Map each published flow to explicit plan IDs so marketing renames do not silently break routing. After changing prices, audit flow rules before the next cancel spike.
- One flow per clear segment — avoid duplicating the same rules at different priorities
- Default flow for “everyone else” after targeted plans are listed
Route cancels by plan automatically
Use audience rules on plan and billing interval so each tier sees a deliberate save path.
