Guide
Reactivate a Stripe Subscription After Scheduling Cancellation
Customers change their minds after scheduling a cancel at period end. Stripe lets you clear some schedules before the subscription deletes — but not after a full cancel completes. Product teams need a explicit “Resume subscription” path that calls the right update parameters for their billing mode.
Timing background: scheduled cancellation timing. Webhooks when schedule clears: Stripe cancellation webhooks.

What you can and cannot undo
Confirm parameters against Update a subscription and cancel subscriptions for your API version.
| State | Typical recovery |
|---|---|
| cancel_at_period_end scheduled | Clear with cancel_at_period_end=false per Stripe docs |
| cancel_at set (flexible / portal) | Clear cancel_at per Update Subscription reference |
| Subscription already deleted | Create a new subscription — no revive API |
UX in your product
- Show “Resume subscription” only while deleted has not fired
- Mirror portal wording if you redirect portal users for reactivation
- After success, refresh entitlements from a retrieved subscription object
- Log reactivation for support — distinct from never canceling
Portal reactivation
Flexible billing portal paths may clear cancel_at when the customer returns through portal UI. Custom apps should not assume the same request body works for API-scheduled vs portal-scheduled cancels. Portal setup: Customer Portal cancellation setup.
Relation to retention offers
A successful pause or discount save should not leave a stale cancel schedule on the subscription. Clear scheduled cancel when the customer accepts an in-flow offer, or you may still lose them at period end. Offer wiring: build a Stripe cancellation flow.
