Discount vs Pause: Which Retention Offer Fits This Cancel Reason?
Coupons and billing pauses are the two most common automated saves in SaaS cancel flows. Both can prevent a cancel in the short term; they send different signals to finance and to the customer.
This guide compares offer types only — not full reason matrices. For strategy and abuse rules see SaaS retention offers. For exit vs deferral see pause vs cancel.

Coupon vs pause at a glance
| Dimension | Discount (coupon) | Billing pause |
|---|---|---|
| Best objections | Budget timing, price sensitivity | Low usage, seasonal pause, “not now” |
| MRR while active | Reduced for coupon duration | Typically zero while collection paused |
| Renewal risk | Cliff when discount ends | Cliff when billing resumes |
| Margin signal | List price looks negotiable | Price unchanged; timing flexible |
Choose a discount when
Coupons are defined in Stripe — duration, percent off, and stacking behavior follow the coupon object; see Stripe coupons.
- They still use the product and say price is the blocker
- Time-bounded discount is acceptable to finance
- No active discount already on the subscription — stacking worsens margin
- Structural fit is not the issue — if it is, see downgrade instead of cancel
Choose a pause when
Pauses typically use pause_collection on the subscription — see pause payment collection and implementation notes in build Stripe cancellation flow.
- They are not getting value right now but may later
- You want to avoid training cancel-for-discount
- Copy can state pause length, access, and resume billing date
When neither discount nor pause fits
- Missing feature, bugs, or support failure — contact team
- Wrong product entirely — clean cancel may be ethical; see when to skip offers
- Repeat cancel attempter within cooldown — offers guide covers offer-once rules
Measure without invented benchmarks
Track acceptance and outcomes by reason and offer type in your own analytics — methodology in customer churn analysis. Do not compare your pause save rate to published industry averages; segment voluntary cancels only.
