Plan Switch vs Discount: Structural Fix or Price Cut at Cancel Time?

A customer who says “too expensive” might need a lower tier — or a temporary discount on the tier they already chose. Plan switch changes the package; coupon changes the economics of the same package.

Use this guide to branch cancel flows for price objections. Downgrade depth: downgrade instead of cancel. Coupon vs pause: discount vs pause. Full mapping: SaaS retention offers.

Decision frame

  • Light usage on a high tier → plan switch first
  • Genuine budget timing on the right tier → time-bounded coupon
  • Already discounted → prefer switch or pause before stacking coupon
  • Missing capability → neither; contact team or clean exit

Cancel-flow branching pattern

After reason = price / too expensive, show one primary offer. If they decline, you may offer a secondary save on a repeat attempt — but design cooldowns so cancel becomes a coupon vending machine.

  • Primary: plan switch with named destination price
  • Secondary (optional): coupon only if switch declined and business rules allow
  • Always: continue to cancel without dark patterns

Why plan switch can beat discount

Stable list price after changeRenewal cliff when promo ends

Stripe implementation notes

Plan switches update subscription items and prorate per your settings — change subscription. Coupons attach via discounts on the subscription — coupons. Application from your cancel UI is covered in build Stripe cancellation flow.

Segment price-objection flows

Enterprise annual accounts may need human negotiation instead of self-serve coupon — see high-value cancellation flow. Trials should rarely see the same discount as long-tenure paid accounts — trial vs paid cancellation flow.
