Update Payment Method Before Cancel: Billing UX That Prevents Mistaken Exits

Customers whose card expired sometimes click “cancel” when they mean “fix billing.” Separating payment updates from the cancel flow reduces false voluntary churn and keeps save offers focused on real intent.

UX patterns

  • Prominent “Update payment method” on billing home — same visual weight as plan info
  • If a charge failed recently, banner on login with update CTA before any cancel link
  • In cancel flow, optional step: “Is this about a failed charge?” → route to billing update

Stripe mechanics

Stripe Customer Portal can expose payment method update; in-app flows often use Checkout or Billing Portal sessions. ChurnIntel does not store card numbers — updates stay in Stripe. Integration overview: Stripe integration.

Measure

Track billing-page updates separately from cancel sessions. Do not count payment fixes as cancel-flow saves. Event ideas: track cancellation outcomes.

Voluntary cancel only in the exit flow

ChurnIntel focuses on reason capture and saves — billing stays in Stripe.
