Export Customer Data Before Cancellation

Customers cancel when they no longer need the product — but they may still need their reports, files, or configuration history. Blocking export until after cancel, or hiding export behind support tickets, creates the worst kind of churn story.

When to surface export

  • Before the final confirm step — especially for annual contracts
  • On the confirmation screen with a direct download link
  • In the post-cancel email with time-limited access if policy allows
  • Never as a retention dark pattern that blocks cancel

What to include in an export

  • User-generated content the customer owns under your terms
  • Usage or billing summaries they may need for finance
  • Clear scope of what is not included (shared team assets, deleted trials)
  • Format customers can open (CSV, JSON, ZIP) without proprietary tools

UX patterns

Pair export with plain-language deadlines: “Download by [date]; workspace read-only after cancel completes.” Align deadlines with final billing after cancellation and Stripe period-end timing where relevant.

Capture why they leave

Combine export with reason capture in ChurnIntel cancel flows.
